“You’re from Brandeis? Not MIT or Stanford?” People in high-technology are often surprised to run into somebody with a Brandeis background. Yet many of our graduates are technology savants, working at the highest levels in companies and institutions of the information age.

This community blog is the gateway to a private Linked-in Network for the extended Brandeis community involved with high tech. We will profile members of the Brandeis Technologist community and their careers, companies and accomplishments, list news, jobs, and events of interest, cover research coming out of Brandeis in CS and related areas, and provide a powerful way to connect to old and new friends and colleagues.

And the name? Well, everyone wants a short and sweet domain name, but all the real words are taken. Blints is sponsored by the CS Department and we’d love to hear from our own alumni, but we welcome anyone in high-technology with a Brandeis background.

Software Engineer & Data Lover <3 <3

Text is beautiful. Text is powerful. Text is fun. Text is social.

We’re a four person social gaming startup comprised of gaming industry and startup veterans. We’ve been there and done that and we’re doing it again.

We’re looking for an engineer to join our team. You’ll be employee #2. You are a data alchemist. You will own our performance data and metrics.

Responsibilities

‣ Own our performance data and help us make sense of it (there’s a lot and will be crazy amounts more).
‣ Build metrics for our internal use, our business partners, and our investors.
‣ Identify the opportunities and (in)efficiencies that only data can illuminate.
‣ Contribute everyday to the success of our company.

Experience

‣ 0 - 4 years. Show us what you’ve done, don’t tell us.
‣ Code - you’ve solved real problems by writing real code.
‣ Games - you don’t just play games, you love games.

Skills

‣ You need strong statistics - we’ll test you. :)
‣ You need solid OO and to have developed in Ruby or Python.
‣ We’re a Linux/OSX shop. If you need pictures to click and your OS doesn’t come with a native command line … no dice.
‣ We live on AWS, EC2, Unicorn, and MySQL.
‣ It’d be great if you had hands on experience with R, EventMachine, or MongoDB (or other doc db).
‣ The three R’s - reliable, responsible, and respectful.

Education

Computer science, math, physics, stats … surprise us. Heck you don’t even need a degree, or you might have a PhD. We care more about your brain, than the time you spent on any campus.

Compensation / Location

This is a paid, full-time plus position with a real salary and equity. We are located in Cambridge, MA and you need to be too.

First Blints Talk!

Pollack, Monday, March 31st, 2008

We are starting to figure out a way to have high-tech alumni visit the department and interact with faculty and students. Comments on how to accomplish this are welcome. Right now, Tim Hickey’s COSI 2A class will be host. Next semester, we hope to make a series of early evening events.

talk-broderick.jpgWHEN: Thursday 3/20/2008, 9am-10am
WHERE: Gzang 121
WHO: Shawn Broderick’88, President/CEO of TrustPlus Inc.,
TALK TITLE: BA not BS: The Imperative Collusion of Liberal Arts and Engineering Alumni

TrustPlus has offices in Waltham and it would be great to start up a Brandeis/TrustPlus internship program to create job opportunities. This event is open to everyone in the Brandeis community, but we are especially interested in getting CS students and faculty to attend the talk and a short reception afterwards.

Moms, don’t let your boys grow up to be Doctors…

admin, Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

According to NPR’s Marketplace, there is a shortage of doctors in Israel, leading to various incentive programs to bring US doctors over. From the Article:

What happened to all of those stereotypical Jewish mothers pushing their kids into medical school?

Danny Ayalon: They say here, that whereas a generation ago, Jewish mothers would really beseech their children to go to medical school, now they tell them to have a startup company — and we have the highest startup companies per capita in the world.

That’s Danny Ayalon, the outgoing Israeli ambassador to the US.

So is this an positive opportunity for Brandeis to expand its Pre-med program, for $40k jobs in Israel, or is it a negative signal that the University should also shift marketing gears to engage in graduating more high-tech entrepreneurial graduates?

First Ever LinkedIn Google Maps Mashup!

Pollack, Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Blints Map

Linked-in was only letting us see BLINTS members 10 at a time, and their API is “coming soon”, and they only resolve your zip-code to “Greater Boston”. But, through the enabling power of clever hacking, we can now see all BLINTS members on a Google Map (but you have to scroll to Europe and Israel!)

Roll-over a pin and see a name; Click on a pin to open an information window and click on the name to open a Linked In profile.

There is a lot more which can be done by somebody younger than me. Put your ideas in comments on this post.
