Job Summary:
To support a network of Linux/Unix workstations and servers for the faculty, staff and students of the Computer Science department. To maintain regular backups of critical research and teaching data. To instruct neophyte users on surviving in a Unix-centric environment (we don’t support Windows on our segment of the campus network). To hire, train and supervise a small staff of undergraduate systems administrators to assist in other duties.
Essential Job Functions:
30% Maintains a network of a dozen core servers and approximately 50 Linux and Macintosh workstations, including regular software updates and data backups.
25% Performs regular security audits of computer science facilities only.
10% Implements appropriate improvements to the department’s computing infrastructure.
10% Assists users with their Linux/Unix usage problems.
15% Supervises undergraduate workers.
5% Coordinates with other science system administrators on issues relevant to all the science departments.
5% Other Duties as Required
Skills/Knowledge:
Must have experience in administering heterogeneous Linux/Unix environment. Requires current knowledge of RFCs and BCPs pertaining to mail, web, DNS, NFS, backups and other technologies as they evolve. Absolutely must keep abreast of current trends in security in a networked environment.
Education Required Bachelor’s degree
Work Experience 1-3 years of total work-related experience
Supervisory / Management Exp. 0-1 year of supervisory/management experience
Supervisory Responsibilities Responsible for supervising (hiring, firing, performance reviews or corrective action) undergraduate “gurus”.
Written and Oral Communication Regularly uses moderately complex oral and written skills, May train others in functional area and interact with others across University and/or externally.
May make presentations to department or middle management.
Knowledge In-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures with ability to use in varied situations.
Collaboration/Service Has some contact with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to give or obtain information or deliver service. Results can affect own functional area.
